People should be refrain from aggressive cosmetic procedures in summer, as they can injure the skin and lead to an inflammatory process, which, in turn, can provoke an intensive reproduction of the iron mites (Demodex), dermatovenereologist Natalya Merkulova told the Moscow City News Agency.

“Demodecosis occurs due to the intensive reproduction of the mite of the genus Demodex, which is an opportunistic skin flora. The favorite localization is the skin of the face, rich in sebaceous glands. Under the influence of factors such as heat, the use of "hormonal" ointments, a decrease in immunity, inflammation of the skin and the reproduction of demodex are provoked. Genetic predisposition also matters," said Natalya Merkulova

According to the specialist, both women and men, most often middle-aged and fair-skinned, are at risk for developing demodicosis.

“The disease develops equally in women and men, more often at an average age of 30-50 years. What matters is the genetic predisposition to such skin diseases as acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, that is, to those diseases in which there is increased oiliness of the skin, dysregulation of sebum,” said.

As a preventive measure, the expert advised spending less time in the sun, it is advisable to go outside in the morning and evening hours, and also not to do aggressive cosmetic procedures in the summer - mechanical facial cleansing, peeling, phototherapy, thermoactive masks, scrubbing.
