Diabetes treatment and medicines are free in Armenia: Today is World Diabetes Day

In Armenia, treatment of diabetes and laboratory-instrumental tests are free for everyone in primary health care. The state also provides medications necessary for the treatment of diabetes, according to the Armenian Ministry of Health.

A healthy diet, regular physical activity, weight control and quitting smoking can reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Access to medication, ensuring the quality of treatment, joint control of the disease by the doctor and the patient will improve the quality of life of the latter and reduce the likelihood of complications.

According to the World Health Organization 2021, the number of diabetes patients in the world is more than 537 million, 240 million of whom live without the diagnosis. In 2021 in Armenia 109 983 people had diabetes, 10 893 people were diagnosed for the first time in their lives, of whom 16 242 had type 1 diabetes and 93 741 had type 2 diabetes, while the number of deceased was 392. The Ministry of Health is working hard on diabetes prevention, early detection, better treatment and access to medication.

The screening program for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is implemented among the population at risk: age groups 35-68 years old. Since its launch, 947,000 citizens have been tested for blood glucose levels. Since 2022 the tests have been financed from the state budget. During 10 months 67,813 glucometric tests were performed.

"National strategy for prevention of diabetes mellitus and its complications for 2022-2026" was approved, which defines the measures aimed at early detection of the disease, prevention and avoidance of its complications, improvement of quality of life of citizens with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes is not a sentence, it can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle.
