Mankind may face epidemic of male infertility

Mankind may face an epidemic of male infertility and, as a consequence, a reproductive crisis, a study of scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has shown.  The researchers published their work in the journal Human Reproduction Update.

The researchers found that the concentration of sperm in men over 40 years has halved. The work involved 153 men from 56 countries, in whom the number of sperm per ml of sperm was counted. It turned out that the average concentration dropped from 101.2 million per ml to 49 million between 1973 and 2018.

Scientists also analyzed other studies and statistics since 1972. It turned out that sperm concentrations were dropping by 1.16% per year. However, when they looked only at data collected since 2000, the decline was 2.64% per year. This suggests a more rapid rate of decline in sperm counts recently.

This is a crisis we need to take care of already before it reaches a tipping point that may be irreversible. This decline is clearly indicative of a decline in the reproductive capacity of the population, the paper's authors noted.
