Every Russian who died at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 could live an average of 14 more years. These are the results of a study by the International Institute of Applied Systems and Analysis that was published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The researchers used the concept of "excess mortality," which looks at the difference between the actual number of deaths and those expected without a pandemic. Scientists took into account not only deaths from the coronavirus, but also quarantine-induced deaths, such as those due to surgery postponement.

The team used the latest data from Russia's Federal State Statistics Service. The researchers estimated that over 2020 and 2021, the pandemic claimed more than a million lives in Russia.

The study also introduced a new measure called the average life expectancy of those who died. They found that in Russia, a person who died because of the pandemic in 2020 could live an average of 14 more years.

The scientists believe their work will help develop pandemic mitigation strategies, as well as gain a clearer picture of pandemics in the future.
