Overweight women have higher risk of long-term COVID-19

Overweight women have a higher risk of long-term coronavirus, English researchers from Norwich Medical School found.

They analyzed data from 1,487 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 at least 12 weeks before the trial. The authors took into account factors such as body mass index (BMI), gender, medication intake, and whether or not the person lived in a well-to-do neighborhood. 774 respondents (52%) reported having at least one long-term symptom of coronavirus. The most common symptoms were anxiety (32%), general pain or malaise (28%), fatigue (25%), insomnia (22%) and cognitive impairment (20%).

It appeared that women and people with high BMI had an increased risk of developing long-term COVID-19 compared to men and people with normal or low BMI, respectively. Thus, women with high BMI were at the highest risk. In addition, experts noticed that older people may be more prone to long-term coronavirus, but there were not enough patients in this study to confirm this. The paper's findings are published in the journal PLOS.

Prolonged COVID-19 usually presents with symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, palpitations, "blurred consciousness," problems with concentration or memory, and others. Long-term coronavirus is considered if symptoms persist 4-12 weeks after infection.
