Specialist: Armenian men are taken to the doctor by their wives

Armenian men are taken to the doctor by their wives because their mentality prevents them from admitting their problems, Tatevik Khachatryan, founder and director of Med Progress Foundation, told NEWS.am Medicine.

According to her, as a rule, Armenian wives are more attentive to their husbands' health than they are, and when they notice problems, they make an appointment with a doctor.

According to the specialist, the research conducted by the Cleveland Clinic showed that in the US men are reluctant to admit their health problems because they have been brought up on superhero cartoons and it is not appropriate for them to show weakness and thus become ill.

In Armenia, of course, it is not the fault of American cartoon characters, but of local stereotypes: it is inadmissible for men to admit to problems, including health problems. Meanwhile, men's health is a global problem for the whole nation. For example, women outnumber men among Armenian adults, while boys outnumber girls among newborns due to selective abortions. Four out of five adult men die of cardiovascular disease, and the average life expectancy of men is several years shorter than that of women.

Med Progress and the Armenian Urological Association organized an interdisciplinary congress dedicated to men's health, discussing all aspects of men's health: urology, reproductology, cardiology, endocrinology, hematology, mental health and addictions. According to Tatevik Khachatryan, such a large-scale congress on men's health is held in Armenia for the first time.
