Diabetes during pregnancy can cause autism in child

December 21, 2022  16:02

A link between diabetes during pregnancy and the development of autism, developmental delays, and cerebral palsy in a child was found by Taiwanese scientists. The article was published in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology.

The study was based on archival data. The analysis included 877,233 children born between 2004 and 2008 in Taiwan whose mothers had type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes during pregnancy. The impact of type 1 diabetes on neurodevelopmental disorders was greatest, followed by type 2 diabetes and then gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes led to a higher incidence of developmental delays, mental retardation, and epilepsy in children. Type 2 diabetes, in addition to the previous diseases, was associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, and cerebral palsy. Gestational diabetes was associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and developmental delays.

This study found only a statistical link between the two phenomena. The authors hope to find out the reasons for this association in future studies.
