U.S. doctors warn of body shaping procedures dangers

December 28, 2022  13:40

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned of the dangers of body sculpting procedures, the administration said in a statement.

As noted by the FDA, although the correction of body contours with manual or instrumental massage is advertised as non-invasive and does not require long rehabilitation, such a procedure, like any other medical intervention, poses risks.

In particular, massage for weight loss can result in pain, redness, swelling and bruising, as well as the formation of nodules under the skin. Such sensations may be short-lived, doctors admitted.

However, the use of devices that apply heat or cold to the body can lead to more dangerous effects, including pigmentation changes, frostbite, loss of sensation, and paradoxical fatty hyperplasia. These may require surgery to correct.

The U.S. agency reminded us that cellulite is a normal skin condition and its presence is generally not associated with any health risks.
