Dietary supplements that combine calcium and vitamin D can be dangerous, say scientists from the University of West Virginia.

Although vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium, the combination of these substances in dietary supplements increases the risk of stroke.

According to a study of over 500,000 people, the calcium-vitamin D combination increases the risk of stroke by 17%.

Vitamin D and calcium are known to be essential for healthy bones. But scientists advise to maintain their level in the body through proper nutrition. Supplements, according to experts, are unsafe, because they contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the vessels.

Scientists advise to apply to dietary supplements only in case of a proven acute deficiency of one of the substances and as prescribed by a doctor. And experts do not recommend dietary supplements for prophylaxis.
