Regular consumption of chamomile tea can effectively lower blood glucose, thus protecting against complications associated with diabetes, said scientists from the University of Aberystwyth in collaboration with Japanese colleagues.

During the study, specialists gave rats with type 2 diabetes a chamomile extract. As a result, they not only decreased their blood glucose, but also blocked the activity of the aldose reductase enzyme, due to which diabetic complications develop. This enzyme converts excess glucose in the blood into sorbitol - a substance that accumulates in the cells and causes various abnormalities.

Researchers tested the ability of chamomile tea to lower blood glucose in a group of volunteers with type 2 diabetes. Volunteers regularly drank chamomile tea for three weeks, thus their blood glucose levels decreased by 25%, although there were no other changes in their lifestyle.

Diabetics are recommended to introduce chamomile tea into their diet, unless, of course, they are allergic to chamomile or any other contraindications for its use. Scientists are sure that this tea will help protect against complications typical of diabetes - damage to the eyes, nerves, kidneys, etc.
