Girl, 10, dies due to infection she caught in river

Lily Avant , 10, from the US state of Texas died after swimming in the Brazos River, where she caught a deadly parasite, Mirror reported. 

According to the source, Lily returned home after swimming on September 8 and complained of a headache and fever. The next day she became even worse, and she was urgently hospitalized on the third day and could not speak.

Doctors examined the girl and found out that she caught a parasite - the amoeba Naegleria Fowleri, which lives in fresh water and devours the brain.

The girl was in an artificial coma, but they could not save her. According to the New York Post, the girl died on Monday, September 16.

Since 1962, 145 known deaths from the amoeba Naegleria Fowleri have been recorded in the US.
