The cause of hair loss and baldness may be air pollution, scientists have found. Air pollution, as it turned out, is associated with a decrease in the level of proteins important for hair growth

According to The Daily Mail, if you live in an environmentally unsafe area, it is advisable to spend less time outdoors.

Particulate matter that enters the air with car exhausts, industrial equipment and heating systems has previously been linked to serious problems, including asthma, heart and lung diseases.

Now, the Future Research Center in the Republic of Korea has analyzed the effect of particles on the cells of the dermal papillae. These cells are located at the base of the hair follicles. Together with skin cells, they control the formation of the hair shaft, are responsible for hair growth and retention. To work, these cells need certain proteins. As part of the experiment, the cells were exposed to different concentrations of solid particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less (PM10).

A day later, scientists recorded a decrease in the level of beta-catenin in the cells, a protein that initiates hair growth. Problems were observed with other important proteins - with cyclin D1, cyclin E and CDK2. What is important, disastrous changes occurred even when in contact with contaminants in a low concentration.
