New analysis to help to quickly calculate antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Scientists at the University of Strathclyde have developed a new test that in just 45 minutes can tell if a bacterium will respond to antibiotics, or if doctors are dealing with persistent superbacteria.

According to The Daily Mail, the new test has already been tested on ordinary Staphylococcus aureus and on its antibiotic-resistant version.

The analysis produces a sensor similar to a Petri-dish coated with an antibiotic. The idea is simple - whether the bacterium will grow under such conditions. If she is not afraid of an antibiotic, the bacterium will begin to activate. If the antibiotic coating works, the bacterium will die.

Such a sensor will also distinguish a viral infection from a bacterial one.

In less than 45 minutes, scientists were able to distinguish a persistent strain of Staphylococcus aureus from an ordinary strain using a test. Now, a similar analysis takes up to two days.
