Experts call for new interpretation of blood tests

One can judge the general state of human health and its estimated life expectancy from three indicators in the blood test. The results of a new study were published in the journal JAMA Network Open.

According to RIA Novosti, the main indicator, according to scientists from the University of Cleveland, is the level of lymphocytes. Data analysis of over 31,000 people revealed a correlation between the level of lymphocytes and mortality. This relationship is independent of age, other blood markers, and additional risk factors.

According to experts, with lymphopenia (low lymphocytes), the risk of death from heart disease, cancer and respiratory infections, including influenza and pneumonia, is increased.

The relationship between lymphopenia and short life expectancy was especially pronounced if low levels of lymphocytes were combined with an abnormal width of the distribution of red blood cells and a certain level of C-reactive protein - these are two other important indicators.

Based on these indicators, specialists built a risk profile for the patient's mortality. Thus, people with a low risk profile live about 10 years longer than those who lead the same lifestyle, but have a high risk profile.
