Anticancer drug to be used to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Scientists from the Technical University of Munich and the Helmholtz Infections Research Center have changed the anticancer drug to get a new drug against antibiotic-resistant infections.

According to News-Medical.net, the tool has already been tested on rodents, and the results is very promising.

Scientists are interested in a group of human kinases for which there are many inhibitors. They changed the active ingredient in a kinase inhibitor that is used to treat cancer and this ingredient also works well against Staphylococcus aureus with multidrug resistance. The modified substance was 10 times more effective than the original, by the way.

Due to the intorduced changes, the compound ceased to attach to kinases and directly affected bacteria. On the one hand, it slowed down the activity of the bacterial protein, which is important for energy metabolism. On the other hand, it acted on the cell wall (enhanced the production of proteins giving wall thickness, which led to cell explosion), thus exerting a comprehensive antibacterial effect.
