One of the main causes of a sudden heart attack can be exposure to ultrafine particles, often found in polluted air, said scientists from Yale University (US).

According to MedicalXpress, the above researchers analyzed data on non-fatal cases of myocardial infarction in Augsburg (Germany) among 5898 patients. Scientists compared the time of heart attacks with the values of air pollution. They also took into account additional factors such as day of the week and socioeconomic status.

It turned out that in the first few hours of exposure to the body, particles can cause malfunctions of the heart. Due to their small size, they easily penetrate the blood and cells.

Ultrafine particles reach a size of 100 nanometers or even less. Their main source is automobile exhausts.
