Within the next decade, a new coronavirus may appear, which, like the current one, will be transmitted from animal to human. This opinion was expressed by Professor Wang Linfa, director of the Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Medical School, The Straits Times reported.

The scientist admitted that it is still difficult to say exactly when it will happen and how serious the outbreak will be.

He also noted that researchers are seriously concerned about the fact that the coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 can be transmitted from human to animal, but after a while—from animal to human.

If we are really unfortunate, he said, the coronavirus would jump to the bats, and bats can carry the virus without symptoms.

For his part, Professor Alex Cook, vice-dean of research at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said the actual number of people infected with the coronavirus could now be ten times higher than the official figures. According to him, the only way to find out the real number of infected people is to check the antibodies.
