Based on a study conducted by scientists at the University of South Australia and published in Clinical Nutrition, drinking six or more cups of coffee a day increases the contents of lipids in the blood, which significantly increases the risk of development of cardiovascular diseases.

MedicalXPress reports that the study was conducted among 365,571 people between the ages of 37 and 73. The scientists studied the genetic and phenotypical links between the use of coffee and the level of cholesterol and fats in the blood which are considered a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Coffee beans also contain cafestol, which increases the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Filtered and instant coffee contain very little cafestol or don’t contain it at all, meaning it may be less dangerous.

Studies show that there is not only a link between coffee and cardiovascular diseases, but it also depends on the dose, meaning the more a person drinks coffee, the higher the possibility of a stroke or heart attack.
