How can electricity help heal wounds?

Electrical stimulation can help blood vessels carry white blood cells and oxygen to wounds, accelerating healing, scientists at Ohio University noted.

According to Medical Express, the stimulation increases the permeability of the blood vessels - a very important characteristic in terms of regeneration.

When there is an injury, the structure of the blood vessels at the site of the wound is disrupted, which makes it difficult for the vessels to repair the damaged tissue. The stimulation of blood vessels with electricity has shown a marked increase in the permeability of these vessels, which is a physical marker indicating the possible growth of new vessels, the scientists said.

Such stimulation allows molecules and cells to move more actively along the walls of blood vessels. Electricity is known to affect the proteins that hold blood vessel cells together.

Electrostimulated dressings have previously been shown to accelerate wound healing in dogs. There is also reason to believe that stimulation helps fight inflammation and infection in the area of damage.
