Russian scientists find effective way to treat pneumonia

Russian experts from, together with foreign colleagues, have discovered a way to effectively treat acute lung injury syndrome (ALS) using natural biologically active substances that are stronger than synthetic analogues.

The results of the study were published in the International Immunopharmacology journal.

According to a press release from UrFU, isoflavonoids, including biochanin A, daidzein, genistein and formonentin, inhibit the development of the inflammatory process that affects the lung tissue. With LSDL, pulmonary edema occurs, which lowers the level of oxygen saturation in the blood. This disease can appear as a complication after surgery on the cardiovascular system or with severe infections, including the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Isoflavonoids are phenolic compounds. Research has shown that they not only stop inflammation, but also have antidiabetic, immunostimulating, anti-aging and anti-tumor effects. Synthetic isoflavonoids are less bioactive than natural isoflavonoids, so these substances are often extracted from plants, including clover, kudzu and soy molasses.

In the study, these substances were tested on tissues and cells of laboratory animals.
