COVID-19 may affect brain more than Alzheimer's disease

COVID-19 can cause even more damage to the human brain than Alzheimer's disease, researchers from the Alzheimer's Disease Association concluded.

As The Daily Mail reports, people with a severe course of COVID-19 who require hospitalization are most at risk. For such patients, symptoms of memory impairment and mental function problems can remain for quite a long time.

The authors of the study observed elderly patients with brain damage who showed no cognitive decline before hospitalization because of COVID-19. However, some time after infection with the coronavirus, 7 markers of brain damage became significantly higher than in patients without the coronavirus but with Alzheimer's disease.

But people who died of coronavirus infection in the hospital had higher levels of these markers than those who recovered and were discharged from the hospital.
