Specialists at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) have proposed a new way to detect glaucoma at an early stage, the journal Ophthalmology Glaucoma writes.

In the study, scientists measured the fluorescence of flavoproteins in the eye, their levels are elevated in people with glaucoma, in 86 patients. To do this, they used a specially designed OcuMet Beacon camera with filters.

Glaucoma caused by thinning of the retina was detected in 50 subjects, while in 36 subjects the disease was not detected.

In the future, the researchers plan to find out if flavoproteins can be used to monitor the effectiveness of the ongoing treatment.
