20:44 10 October, 2022After retirement, people risk acquiring various diseases due to decreased physical activity. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the University of Turku in Finland, whose work was published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
The researchers studied 515 people who wore an accelerometer on their wrist 24 hours a day for a week before they retired and a year after. It turned out that the retirees slept an average of 36 minutes longer a day and exercised an hour less than before they retired.
Scientists say such habits are linked to many health problems, including heart disease, dementia and high blood pressure.
The researchers urge people who are retiring to strive to increase physical activity.
