Two young women have died in Brazil after being infected with the oropouche fever, according to the country's Ministry of Health, reports RBC. They are the first recorded victims of this disease.

The Ministry of Health explained that these women were under 30 years old. Their illness progressed with "symptoms similar to a severe form of dengue fever," the ministry added.

Dengue fever is an acute viral illness characterized by intoxication, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and high fever.

Since the beginning of 2024, more than 7,000 cases of dengue fever have been registered in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Health.

The World Health Organization had reported the first cases of the oropouche virus in French Guiana in October 2020. And in early June 2024, this virus was detected in nine Cuban provinces.
