How not to “miss” the development of oral cancer

Signs of oral cancer can be mistaken for ulcers or candida. But as Professor Paul Brocklehurst told Public Health Wales, with cancer the lesions heal slowly and are accompanied by speech problems, hoarseness of voice and a lump in the throat.

Candidiasis (or thrush) occurs when a fungus of the genus Candida infects the mucous membranes and skin and is manifested by white plaque, spots and blisters on the tongue, corners of the mouth and tonsils.

However, oral cancer has its own characteristics: it is characterized by non-healing ulcers, red or white patches, painful lumps in the mouth or on the lips, and pain when swallowing and speaking. Additional signs may include hoarseness of the voice and a feeling of a lump in the throat. Unexplained weight loss is a particularly important signal.

As Brocklehurst emphasized, early diagnosis of cancer greatly increases the chances of successful treatment. Therefore, it is important to see a dentist or general practitioner immediately if these symptoms appear. Regular preventive check-ups with dentists also play a key role in early detection of the disease.
