Armenia hospitals, polyclinics to no longer perform fluorography

The hospitals and polyclinics in Armenia will no longer perform fluorography, and the relevant equipment will be decommissioned. The decision to this effect was made at Thursday's Cabinet meeting of the Armenian government.

The decision was made taking into account the fact that, according to the conclusion of the Ministry of Health of Armenia, fluorography does not meet the requirements of current medical science.

Fluorography has a low degree of diagnostic efficiency, and, in practice, for some illnesses it is necessary to additionally perform some other radiological or radiation diagnostic examinations—e.g., digital X-ray, computed tomography.

Also, in parallel with the development of technology, the radiation load caused by digital X-ray examination devices has decreased several times, equaling the load caused by a fluorography device. The same trend is observed in the case of computed tomography, too.
