15:34 15 November, 2025Washing raw chicken can be deadly for humans, according to 9news.com, citing representatives of Australia’s Food Safety Information Council (FSIC).
“Despite what you may hear online or see in blogs, washing raw chicken is a myth that only spreads bacteria around the kitchen,” said the Council’s deputy chair, Associate Professor Julian Cox.
The expert explained that pathogenic microorganisms — including salmonella and E. coli — may remain on the surface of raw chicken. When poultry is washed in a home kitchen, these bacteria are “splashed” onto surrounding surfaces, increasing the risk of severe foodborne illness. Specialists recommend avoiding this dangerous habit, as poultry undergoes the necessary sanitation processes during production. At home, it only needs to be cooked thoroughly.
“Food poisoning remains a serious threat to health <…>. Simple precautions can save lives,” Cox concluded, as reported by RIA Novosti.
Experts also reminded consumers to wash their hands and surfaces thoroughly after contact with raw chicken. They additionally advised defrosting poultry only in the refrigerator or microwave, preventing contact with ready-to-eat foods—especially those that will not be reheated—and using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw poultry.
