18:43 28 November, 2025A team of American and Brazilian scientists conducted a study showing that daily consumption of orange juice has a positive effect on the activity of genes associated with heart function and metabolism.
The results of the new research were published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. When examining immune cell samples from the participants, the experts identified notable changes in about 1,700 genes linked to inflammation mechanisms, blood pressure, and the body’s fat-utilization processes, Planet Today reports.
The experiment involved 20 healthy individuals who were required to drink two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice every day for two months.
The analysis revealed that participants with a normal body mass index experienced significant changes in the expression of genes responsible for immune system regulation. Meanwhile, those who were overweight showed changes in gene expression related to metabolism and energy exchange.
Flavonoids play a key role in these processes. Oranges are rich in them, and they have powerful antioxidant properties that strongly influence the functioning of genetic mechanisms.
However, the scientists emphasize that additional and broader studies are needed. Moreover, orange juice has several contraindications: it is not recommended for people with diabetes or gastrointestinal issues.
