21:17 30 November, 2025Scientists from Boston University have found that long-term, carefully managed calorie reduction may slow brain aging at the cellular level. The study was published in Aging Cell.
This is not about harsh fasting, but rather about a roughly 30% reduction in calorie intake — a level that can be safely maintained for years. The research spanned virtually the entire lives of its participants: it began back in the 1980s in collaboration with the U.S. National Institute on Aging and concluded after the participants’ natural deaths, when researchers were able to examine their brains in detail.
To compare how the brain cells of people eating a typical diet differed from those who followed a long-term, lighter-calorie diet, the scientists used one of the most precise modern techniques — single-nucleus RNA sequencing. The results were striking. The cells of those who adhered to moderate calorie restriction showed more signs of “healthy functioning”: greater activation of genes responsible for myelin — the protective sheath of nerve fibers — as well as better performance of metabolic pathways associated with energy balance and the maintenance of brain white matter structure. In other words, these cells appeared younger and more resilient.
According to the researchers, this suggests that sustained, reasonable calorie reduction may indeed support brain health and slow natural age-related changes such as white matter deterioration, loss of myelin, and weakening of neuronal connections. It’s not a miracle cure, but rather a gentle, natural approach to helping the brain age more slowly.
Although the study was conducted in models closely resembling humans and still needs confirmation in larger human groups, the authors believe the findings are an important step. They show that diet may be a powerful tool for preserving mental clarity and memory in old age.
