19:42 19 January, 2026Scientists have found that saffron extract can help support memory, reduce anxiety, and improve metabolism in old age. The results of a preclinical study were published in the journal Nutrients.
The experiment used a standardized saffron extract with precisely measured amounts of safranal and crocins—the plant’s main active compounds. Studies were conducted on aged mice modeling age-related changes, including memory decline, increased anxiety, and metabolic disturbances. Researchers confirmed that safranal enters the bloodstream after administration, indicating its bioavailability.
Higher doses of the extract reduced anxious behavior and improved the ability to recognize new objects, reflecting enhanced memory function. These effects were accompanied by changes in brain signaling molecules related to stress, emotions, and neuroplasticity. Lower doses, in turn, slowed age-related weight loss and influenced genes regulating fat metabolism in the liver.
The authors emphasize that this is a preclinical study, and the findings cannot be directly extrapolated to humans.
