00:40 28 February, 2026Microwave-ready meals are a convenience that is hard to resist on a busy day. However, as a new report warns, they may be quietly causing serious harm to both our health and the environment.
A report by Greenpeace International analyzes 24 recent scientific studies on hidden health risks associated with ready meals packaged in plastic. It paints a troubling picture: hundreds of thousands of tiny plastic particles can migrate into our food, along with hazardous chemicals that may have far-reaching health consequences.
“Many people think they are making a harmless choice when they buy and heat food packaged in plastic,” said Graham Forbes, head of the global plastics campaign at Greenpeace USA, as reported by Euronews.
“In reality, we are being exposed to a cocktail of microplastics and dangerous chemicals that have no place in or near our food.”
The pollution does not end there. Plastic trays and films cause damage throughout their entire life cycle — from fossil fuel extraction to energy-intensive production and eventual disposal.
When it is time to discard these single-use plastic products, their multilayered materials make recycling extremely difficult. As they break down into micro- and nanoplastics, these tiny fragments accumulate in soil, rivers, and oceans, harm wildlife, and re-enter the human food chain.
Even when plastics enter the circular economy, they degrade in quality and may once again release hazardous additives as part of new products.
According to the report, products labeled “microwave safe” may give consumers a false sense of security. The labeling typically refers to the structural integrity of the container — not whether it releases microplastics or chemical additives into food.
One study found that just five minutes of microwave heating can release between 326,000 and 534,000 micro- and nanoplastic particles into food simulants. Nanoplastics are small enough to potentially enter organs and the bloodstream.
Plastics are also known to contain more than 4,200 hazardous chemicals. Most are not regulated in food packaging, and some have been linked to cancer, infertility, hormonal disruption, and metabolic disorders, the authors note.
At least 1,396 chemicals from food-contact plastics have been detected in the human body, and growing evidence connects such exposure to neurodevelopmental disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
The report states that higher temperatures, longer heating times, worn containers, and fatty foods — which absorb chemicals more readily — significantly increase the amount of plastic particles and additives transferred into ready meals.
It concludes that current global guidelines regulating microplastic release from food packaging are insufficient, and that industry denial of the problem contributes to delays in adopting stricter standards.
