Bleeding Gums May Indicate the Risk of Serious Health Conditions

Researchers from Frontiers in Immunology have found that periodontitis — an inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth caused by bacterial plaque — may be linked to an increased risk of systemic diseases, including diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and arthritis.

According to experts, periodontitis affects 35–50% of adults. The inflammation can extend beyond the oral cavity: bacteria and their toxins may enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammatory responses.

A review of studies showed that periodontitis increases the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases, lung disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis, Chronic kidney disease, and Stroke. It may also be associated with heart attacks and premature birth. Scientists believe that chronic inflammation, impaired immune regulation, and the spread of bacteria throughout the body play key roles in these processes.

Although a direct cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been proven in all cases, the condition of the gums may serve as an important indicator of overall health. Regular oral hygiene and timely treatment of gum diseases are considered important measures for preventing systemic illnesses.

Earlier studies also showed that natural compounds found in coffee beans may help reduce gum inflammation.
