Researchers found that in some young adults, memories related to alcohol consumption are formed differently—and this may increase the likelihood of continued drinking.
The study focuses on memory mechanisms, specifically “recollection,” the ability to accurately retrieve detailed information about past events. Scientists discovered that in individuals at higher risk of addiction, this process may be weakened, while a general sense of “familiarity” (without specific details) remains intact.
This means that such individuals may have difficulty distinguishing the specific contexts in which they consumed alcohol, while still retaining a broadly positive impression of the experience. As a result, an altered memory pattern may form: negative or neutral details fade, while the overall impression remains more favorable, potentially encouraging repeated alcohol use.
The study involved young adults whose cognitive functions and alcohol-related behavioral patterns were assessed. Researchers used specialized memory tests that separate precise recollection from general recognition in order to understand how these differences arise.
The results showed that reduced ability to retrieve detailed memories is associated with higher levels of problematic alcohol use. According to the authors, this may represent an important cognitive mechanism that has previously been underestimated in the context of addiction.
The researchers emphasize that the findings do not imply a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, they open a new direction for research: if memory processes do influence addiction, then targeting cognitive mechanisms could become part of prevention and treatment strategies.
