AJHE: Drinking Clean Water in Childhood Extends Life Expectancy by Months

A new study published in the American Journal of Health Economics suggests that the introduction of municipal drinking water filtration systems in the United States in the early 20th century may have had a measurable impact on human life expectancy, particularly among those exposed to clean water during early childhood.

The researchers conclude that access to purified water in childhood is associated with a small but statistically significant increase in life expectancy in adulthood, estimated at several additional months.

The study is based on an analysis of historical mortality data for men born between 1975 and 2005, using the Death Master Files database of the U.S. Social Security Administration. Researchers matched individuals’ place and year of birth with records on the implementation of water filtration systems in cities in order to assess the long-term effects of early exposure to improved water quality.

The findings suggest that municipal drinking water filtration systems may have increased male life expectancy by an average of about 3.2 months. Scientists note that this effect is linked not only to a direct reduction in infectious diseases during childhood, but also to long-term socioeconomic benefits.

Additional analysis of mid-20th century census data (1950–1970) indicates that improved water quality in early life may have contributed to higher levels of education and income, which in turn positively affected health and longevity. Researchers also found correlations between early access to clean water, greater height, and improved cognitive performance in young adulthood.

The authors emphasize that this study is part of a broader scientific research program examining how early childhood conditions influence health outcomes and mortality later in life.

As part of this broader body of research, previous studies have also shown that anti-hookworm campaigns in the southern United States in the early 20th century may have increased life expectancy by approximately 1.3 months among those exposed to the intervention.
