18:31 5 June, 2026A new study published in the journal Life suggests that just four weeks of a structured Pilates program may be associated with improvements in several physiological markers among previously sedentary women, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and neuroendocrine parameters.
Pilates is traditionally viewed as a form of exercise designed to enhance physical endurance, balance, postural control, and muscular stability while also supporting psychological well-being and quality of life. The method is built around six core principles: breathing, concentration, control, precision, centering, and fluid movement. Previous research has linked regular Pilates practice to improved fitness and reduced emotional stress.
In the study, 30 women with low levels of physical activity were divided into two age groups: 30–40 years and 50–60 years. All participants completed a supervised four-week Pilates program consisting of three sessions per week, each lasting 50 to 60 minutes.
Researchers measured several health indicators before and after the intervention, including heart rate, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, and cortisol levels.
Following completion of the program, improvements were observed across most measured outcomes, although not all changes reached statistical significance in both age groups.
Among women aged 30–40 years, researchers reported significant reductions in resting heart rate, blood pressure, BMI, and fasting glucose levels.
In the 50–60-year age group, more pronounced decreases in blood pressure, glucose, and cortisol levels were observed, suggesting that participants with higher baseline metabolic and stress-related burdens may have experienced a stronger physiological response to the intervention.
Analysis of the relationships among the measured variables indicated that changes in cardiovascular function, metabolism, and hormonal regulation occurred in a coordinated manner, reflecting a broad adaptive response to physical activity rather than isolated improvements in individual systems.
The researchers noted, however, that reductions in body weight and BMI may not have been attributable solely to Pilates. Some participants also made dietary changes during the study period, which may have contributed to the observed effects.
The authors emphasized several limitations of the research. Most importantly, the absence of a control group makes it difficult to draw firm cause-and-effect conclusions. In addition, the relatively small sample size limits the extent to which the findings can be generalized to larger populations.
Despite these limitations, the study adds to growing evidence that Pilates may offer benefits extending beyond flexibility and core strength, potentially influencing cardiovascular health, metabolic regulation, and stress-related hormonal pathways, particularly among individuals with previously low levels of physical activity.
