Scientists Find Way to Treat Childhood Cavities Without Drilling or Anesthesia

Researchers at the University of Michigan have confirmed the effectiveness of a simple and inexpensive treatment for dental cavities in young children. The results of the clinical trial were published in JAMA Pediatrics.

The study included 830 children under the age of six. Researchers found that a 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution, which is applied to the affected tooth in just a few seconds, halted the progression of tooth decay in more than half of treated primary teeth when applied once every six months.

Unlike conventional dental treatment, the method does not require drilling, local anesthesia, or fillings. According to the researchers, it is safe even for children as young as one year old.

Dental caries remains the most common chronic disease in children. If left untreated, it can cause severe pain, infections, difficulties with eating and sleeping, and, in severe cases, may require surgery under general anesthesia.

The main drawback of the treatment is cosmetic. The solution permanently stains the decayed portion of the tooth dark black, although it does not discolor healthy tooth structure.

The study authors believe their findings could support U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of silver diamine fluoride specifically for the treatment of dental caries.

Such approval could lead to wider use of SDF in dentistry and even in pediatric healthcare settings, allowing children to receive treatment before pain and serious complications develop.
