CB: Kefir, Yogurt, and Cottage Cheese May Support Muscle Growth and Repair

Kefir, yogurt, and cottage cheese may help support muscle health by providing the protein needed for muscle growth and repair. This is the conclusion of scientists who published a scientific review in the journal Communications Biology (CB).

The researchers analyzed scientific studies on the relationship between the gut and muscles. They focused in particular on protein-rich fermented foods, including kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, and tempeh, a product made from soybeans.

The findings suggest that fermentation may make protein easier to digest and absorb, helping supply the body with the nutrients needed for muscle growth and repair. During fermentation, microorganisms partially break down proteins, potentially making it easier for the body to obtain the amino acids it needs.

In addition, beneficial bacteria and compounds found in fermented foods may help reduce inflammation. This is important because chronic inflammation can impair muscle health and interfere with normal recovery.

The researchers also found that gut bacteria play a role in regulating metabolism and nutrient absorption. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiota may therefore indirectly support normal muscle function.

However, the researchers emphasize that there is currently no evidence that fermented foods increase muscle mass or strength more effectively than conventional protein sources.
