The Telegraph: Carnivore Diets and Ice Baths Do Not Extend Lifespan

Molecular biologist and cellular ageing researcher Nicola Conlon has questioned the benefits of two popular practices often touted as ways to extend lifespan: the carnivore diet, which consists primarily of meat, and cold-water immersion. Her views were published in The Telegraph.

According to Conlon, there is no convincing scientific evidence that a strict meat-only diet can extend lifespan.

“Eliminating plant foods deprives the body of fibre and several essential nutrients, including vitamin C,” the expert warned.

The biologist emphasized that evidence linking an exclusively meat-based diet to longevity remains insufficient. By contrast, traditional diets in regions where people frequently live to an advanced age generally include plenty of plant-based foods.

Conlon also cautioned against overstating the benefits of ice baths. Exposure to cold triggers a stress response in the body and activates physiological processes that could potentially improve stress resilience. However, human studies have not yet established with confidence that this practice increases lifespan.

“Some scientific studies suggest that cold-water immersion may reduce stress levels and improve sleep, but the findings are mixed. It is too early to consider ice baths a proven tool for longevity. Further research is needed to assess their long-term effects on health,” Conlon said.
