Frontiers: Japanese Cherry Blossom Extract May Slow the Aging of Skin Cells

Extract from the flowers of the Japanese Kanzan cherry blossom variety may protect skin cells from damage, reduce inflammation, and support collagen production. This is the conclusion reached by Chinese researchers who tested the effects of the extract on human skin cells in laboratory experiments. The findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

The researchers analyzed the chemical composition of cherry blossoms at four stages of flowering and identified 13 compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. These substances have potential antioxidant properties. The highest concentrations of the main active compounds were found in partially opened flowers.

The scientists then tested the extract on skin cells whose aging had been artificially accelerated using methylglyoxal, a substance that can increase oxidative stress and damage cellular structures.

The experiments showed that the extract and two of its main components reduced signs of cellular aging and lowered oxidative stress. They also helped restore cell structure and increased the production of type I collagen, a protein that helps maintain skin firmness and strength.

The authors believe that cherry blossom extract could become a promising ingredient in skincare products designed for mature skin. However, the findings have so far been obtained under laboratory conditions. Further research will be needed to assess the effectiveness and safety of such products in humans.
