Number of people in Armenia hospitalized with acute respiratory illnesses increases by 181 in 3 days, most are children

It is an active phase of the spread of acute respiratory infections in Armenia, which is consistent with the season. Yevgenya Khachatryan, an epidemiologist at the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious and Non-infectious Diseases of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Armenia, stated this in an interview with NEWS.am Medicine, and emphasized that the respective target group is children.

According to her, the Ministry of Health of Armenia carries out weekly and daily monitoring of the situation. Daily monitoring has shown that the cases of acute respiratory illnesses have increased in the country, and one of the reasons is not going to medical centers during the recent holidays.

"As of January 10, the number of people hospitalized [in Armenia] with acute respiratory infections is 760. 92% of them are children aged 0-18. 287 patients have pneumonia, 62% of whom are minors. As of January 10, there are 84 patients in the intensive care units. Most of them, 97%, are up to 18 years old," said Khachatryan.

In her words, the current respective situation in Armenia is practically the same compared to last year, whereas compared to January 7, the number of hospitalized people in Armenia has increased by 181, and the number of pneumonia patients has increased from 181 to 287. But the number of people in intensive care units has dropped by three.

The H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes of the influenza A virus are currently circulating in Armenia.

But several other types of acute respiratory infection are also widespread in the country.
