Daily Mail: abrupt withdrawal from alcohol can cause you to feel unwell

January 23, 2024  14:15

Clinical pharmacologist Leila Hannbeck and Julie Symes, Senior Communications Manager of Alcohol Change UK (a UK-based alcoholism charity) told the Daily Mail that abrupt withdrawal from alcohol can lead to poor physical and mental health.

Hannbeck explained that in cases of severe alcohol dependence, giving up alcohol can cause nausea and vomiting, tremors, insomnia, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, depressive states and hallucinations. Complete withdrawal from alcohol is harmful especially in withdrawal, after the end of the binge status.

This is because alcohol acts as a depressant, reducing the activity of the nervous system. Abruptly stopping this effect can be harmful to physical and mental health. Symes explained that signs of alcohol dependence include an inability to stop after two drinks, a sense of loss of control over behavior while drinking alcohol, and an awareness of its negative impact on health, mental health, and social aspects of life.

Dr. Hannbeck clarified that quitting alcohol can be the first step to improve well-being. However, it is more effective and safer to start a healthy lifestyle under the guidance of an addiction counselor. It is also possible to enlist the support of charitable organizations that help people who abuse alcohol.
