The Sun: experts told about symptoms of 'invisible disease'

January 23, 2024  18:28

An underactive thyroid gland can manifest itself through several common symptoms such as fatigue, depression, feeling cold all the time and weight gain, The Sun reports. These signs can be easily confused with other conditions, and often develop slowly, making them not obvious for years. Hence the name "invisible disease."

The thyroid gland plays a key role in the body, producing hormones such as thyroxine that affect metabolism and energy. When this gland doesn't produce enough hormones due to an immune system attack, it can be the source of invisible problems.

Without treatment, an underactive thyroid gland can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease due to blood cholesterol levels. Other serious consequences such as goiter, increased risk of complications during pregnancy, and, in rare cases, a condition called myxedema coma are also possible.

To diagnose thyroid problems, you should have a blood test to check your hormone levels. If you have symptoms such as fatigue, depression, or weight changes, it is important to see your doctor for a proper evaluation. In most cases, treatment involves taking hormone pills to help restore the balance of hormones in the body.
