What foods at breakfast harm our health? Endocrinologist and nutritionist Anastasia Tarasko gave her take on the matter, RIA Novosti reported.

The expert considers having strong tea and coffee on an empty stomach harmful, as they irritate the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and do not fill the body with energy.

Cakes, candies, and pastries can also be harmful, as they contain very fast carbohydrates, which are quickly absorbed and provoke a rise in glucose. Consumption of these common sweet foods causes a rapid feeling of hunger and headache.

"Fatty meat, smoked, marinated products are ‘heavy’ foods for digestion. After such a breakfast, as a rule, drowsiness occurs, the ability to work decreases," said the nutritionist.

Tarasco advises to follow the rules of the food plate during all meals, according to which about a quarter of the total amount should be protein.

"It can be eggs, cottage cheese, turkey, chicken, any lean fish. Half should be vegetables and fruits, a quarter—long carbohydrates or whole grains," said the nutritionist.

According to the specialist, the protein can be supplemented with a small amount of fats, melted oil or unrefined vegetable oil, and nuts.
