Why do some foods make you want to eat more?

Endocrinologist Olga Pavlova has told what factors influence satiety and why we sometimes want to eat more after a meal, MedikForum reported.

According to her, two factors are responsible for the feeling of fullness in our body: the physical and biochemical filling of the stomach. They differ in calories and the amount of food eaten.

"If lunch was calorie-dense, but the portion was small, it is likely that the feeling of hunger will overtake us again after a while. The stomach is not full, so we begin to want to eat again," the expert noted.

If you eat small portions all the time, over time, it is possible to accustom the body to be satiated with a small amount of food. However, this will take a lot of time and effort.

The biochemical factor is to provide the body with all the necessary elements: proteins, fats and carbohydrates. And they all have to be in one meal, she explained.

"Just a salad, even if you eat a whole bowl, will not satiate you, but only further whet your appetite. Because it has no protein in it. And a protein shake, which is protein in concentrated form, will require a supplement in the form of vegetables," the endocrinologist noted.

Also, any food affects insulin and blood glucose levels. The higher these indices are (that is, the indices go up significantly after consuming this or that food), the less satiety will last and the more these foods provoke a feeling of hunger.

For example, kefir has a low caloric value but a high insulin index. This means that after a glass of kefir you will want to eat something else.

Snacking on fruit without protein can also increase your appetite and make you hungry.
