How to check your digestive health using baking soda at home?

October 23, 2023  18:51

In a comprehensive guide by renowned nutritionist Meg MacDonald, individuals can now assess their stomach health from the comfort of their homes, using a simple solution of baking soda and water. A recent report by The Daily Mail highlights this practical method, which relies on the presence or absence of belching after consuming the solution on an empty stomach.

Stomach acid, an essential digestive fluid synthesized within the stomach lining, serves crucial roles in disinfecting ingested food and creating an acidic environment conducive to the activity of digestive enzymes. In cases where stomach acidity is low, the efficient digestion of food can become challenging, leading to a range of discomforting symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, and heartburn.

MacDonald's approach entails dissolving a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of water, which is then ingested on an empty stomach. The reaction of baking soda with stomach acid generates gases that typically induce belching. A delay or absence of this response within two minutes of consuming the solution is indicative of reduced gastric juice acidity.

When low acidity is confirmed, healthcare professionals often recommend specific vitamins such as iron and calcium to supplement and regulate stomach acid levels. However, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for accurate guidance and personalized recommendations tailored to individual health needs.
