Cell: New oral cancer test will reduce the number of biopsies by 95%

March 5, 2024  19:16

Oral cancer and its precancerous lesions are difficult to detect at an early stage. The authors of a paper in the journal Cell Reports Medicine have proposed a new accurate method of diagnosis.

Head and neck cancer, of which oral cancer accounts for about 90 per cent, is the seventh most common malignancy worldwide.

One of the most accurate methods of diagnosing oral cancer is biopsy, which is the analysis of oral tissue. Due to its high cost, invasiveness and stress for the patient, it is tried to be used as rarely as possible. A new method based on the analysis of HBD-3 and HBD-2 proteins addresses these problems.

The already patented technology will help to reduce the frequency of biopsies by 95 per cent, mainly by excluding non-cancerous lesions of the mouth that do not require an invasive procedure.
