What are dangers of sunflower seeds?

Sunflower seeds can be dangerous, according to Marina Makisha, nutritionist and member of the National Association of Dietitians and Nutritionists (Russia).

According to the specialist the problem, lies in the high caloric content of sunflower seeds: only 50 grams of peeled seeds give the body about 400 kilocalories. That number of calories contains a whole meal.

Makisha believes that uncontrolled consumption of sunflower seeds leads to weight gain, which is often accompanied by poor health.

"Weight gain is followed by a breakdown of the entire energy metabolism in the body, intrasystemic inflammation and a whole bouquet of diseases," the specialist said.

According to nutritionist Michael Ginzburg, the sunflower seeds have other negative properties. In particular, they can cause allergies and pose a threat to people with gastritis and stomach ulcers.

"When we chew sunflower seeds, the edges of what we swallow get pretty sharp. And those edges can pretty much irritate erosions, meaning they can lead to exacerbations of gastritis and exacerbations of peptic ulcers," Ginzburg said.
