Why Does Your Brain Feel Like It’s “Melting” in Hot Weather? Scientists Explain How High Temperatures Affect Thinking

Hot weather can genuinely make us feel sluggish: high temperatures can slow down thought processes, impair concentration, and make even familiar everyday tasks more difficult, The Conversation reports.

Scientists attribute this to the additional strain placed on the brain and body as they work to maintain a normal core temperature.

When the ambient temperature rises, thermoreceptors located near the surface of the skin send signals to the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for regulating body temperature. In response, the body activates cooling mechanisms: sweating increases, more blood is directed toward the skin, and the body releases heat more actively.

For the brain, this means additional physiological demands. While the body is working to maintain a temperature of around 37°C, cognitive functions can be affected, particularly when a person has to concentrate for long periods or solve complex problems.

The strain becomes even greater during physical activity. Working muscles and an increased metabolic rate generate additional heat, forcing the body to activate its cooling mechanisms more intensively.

High temperatures can also directly affect the functioning of nerve cells. Communication between neurons depends on the activity of enzymes and proteins and the movement of ions across cell membranes, all of which are sensitive to temperature. During severe overheating, this delicate balance can be disrupted, affecting memory, concentration, and decision-making.

Another factor is dehydration. In hot weather, the body loses more fluid through sweat. If these losses are not adequately replaced, the cardiovascular system faces additional strain as it works to supply blood to the skin and internal organs, including the brain.

Because the brain is more than 70% water, even moderate dehydration can negatively affect attention, reaction time, and short-term memory. Dehydration can reduce cerebral blood flow, alter neuronal function, and disrupt the electrolyte balance needed for normal nervous-system activity.

Heat can also affect the brain indirectly by disrupting sleep. High temperatures can make it harder to fall asleep and may reduce the amount of deep, restorative sleep. As a result, people may experience additional problems with attention, memory, and thinking the following day.

However, people respond to heat differently. Some tolerate high temperatures relatively well, while others may struggle to perform even simple or familiar tasks. Individual physiology and heat tolerance play an important role.

To reduce the impact of high temperatures on cognitive performance, experts recommend staying cool, wearing lightweight clothing, taking breaks when spending time in the heat, and drinking water regularly.
