Esophagus cancer linked to chronic heartburn

April 17, 2017  10:47

Cancer of the esophagus is the fastest rising type of cancer in the country.

If you have frequent heartburn, you're at risk for a condition that could double your chance of developing the cancer.

Dr. Blair Jobe, Director of the Esophageal and Lung Institute Allegheny said, "I think having chronic symptoms or the need to take medication everyday to control symptoms is really what differentiates having a little bit of indigestion once every other month to someone who has frank gastro esophageal reflux disease."

He said the chronic inflammatory state related to reflux and heartburn can create an environment that can lead to cancer. However, he said it is relatively rare.

Risk factors including being a white man over the age of 50 and smoking.

Dr. Jobe said the instances of esophageal cancer are rising. He said they are linked to the country's obesity epidemic.
