Weight-loss surgery can revive your sex life, study finds

More than half of the patients who underwent bariatric surgery reported a more active and fulfilling sex life for years to come, according to a recent study published in JAMA Surgery.

Researchers monitored the changes in the erotic activity for about 2,000 weight-loss surgery patients. Study author Kristine Steffen, from North Dakota State University, says her research focused on four different aspects of sexuality: how often patients felt desire, how often they engaged in intimacies, how their physical health limited such carnal pursuits — and their overall genital gratification.

Steffen and her colleagues found that an “improvement in sexual satisfaction generally persists over five years following surgery in both women and men.”

All the participants were severely obese prior to their surgery, with an average body mass index of 46. (For reference, 18.5 to 24.9 BMI is considered healthy.) About 70 percent of the women and 74 percent of the men reported being unhappy with their sex lives pre-surgery, with 60 percent and 67 percent, respectively, adding that their weight physically hampered their orgasmic potential.

A year after their procedures, 56 percent of those women and 49 percent of those men said that their amorous activities had improved.

Most astonishing is the long-term effect the surgery seems to have on sex. Sixty-eight percent of men reported better performance between the sheets. And while only one-third of the women asked maintained that higher rate of sexual desire and activity, more than half said that their health was no longer a physical boundary in the bedroom, and that they continued being happier with their horny times.
